If you receive an email from Google asking to transfer ownership of your business' google my business page, it's most likely a scam.

Google My Business (GMB) is a great platform that allows business owners to manage their online presence. However, there is a scam going around where scammers are requesting access to GMB accounts. Don't fall for this scam.

Here's What You Need To Know

Businesses started receiving emails from Google telling us that someone has requested ownership of their GMB profiles. The messages themselves are not fake but these requests are coming from fraudulent sources like scammers/bots trying to gain access and control the account.

The purpose of this scam may be to drain you financially or take away your valuable time. We don't know for sure because there are so many reasons why someone might do such a thing, but one thing's certain: It will be an enormous pain if you lose ownership of a GMB listing that you've worked hard to build, optimize and gather reviews on.

What To Do If Someone Requests Ownership Access of Your GMB Account

Please do not ignore these emails. Here's why: from my past experience in claiming ownership of GMB listings that clients are unable to access for one reason or another, if a request goes unanswered by the current owner Google can approve it and give scammers access so they may claim your page as their own!

This rule is mentioned by Google My Business Help under the What to do after you’ve requested ownership section.

I’d advise you to simply hit “Review Request" in the email and then follow instructions. The scammer will be notified that their request was rejected, but your GMB account is safe! HEADS UP! - when rejections happen they might randomly send out more requests or use different names so keep a close eye on things. They want you to not see the email so Google grants ownership to them!

What Should Be Done About the Issue?

There are no laws or anything to stop this from happening yet. In some cases, being able to claim a currently owned and verified GMB listing is important. For example, if you're employee created your listing but then left the company without turning it over, there needs be an ability to get ownership access to what is rightfully yours. Unfortunately, this means that others are trying to take advantage seeing this as an opportunity.

With so many scammers out in the world, business owners need to keep their Google My Business accounts up-to date and active.

The following are some tips to help you be proactive with your Google My Business account.

Check your business information for accuracy and keep it up to date on your GMB listing. If you want to ensure that Google emails, calls or sends any sort of verification they need your information to be accurate.
Monitor the email connected to your GMB account. It only takes 7 DAYS with no response to one of these emails to go unnoticed before ownership of your account is automatically transferred to hackers/bots,
Set up the Google 2-Step Verification on your Google account. Google 2-Step Verification is a great way to keep your account safe and secure. When enabled the Google security feature will send an authentication code every time someone attempts access of your google profile/account.

Have you Googled or Binged or Yahoo'd your business? It is a MUST!

It's free to update the profile or create one if there is none.
Everyone else is!
If it contains incorrect information, you could be loosing customers.

When you search for your business, a profile box should come up with details about your business including: location, phone number, hours, reviews (Google and Facebook), a link to your website or Social Media page (whatever you have put in), and any Google Posts you've written (I'll mention more about that in a bit). By the way, the desktop version is pictured below, but the box on the right should pop up on the phone as well, with the links on the left below it.

The number one reason to get your profile claimed and correct is to keep your customers up to date. Businesses change locations, change open times depending on the season, or have to adjust times/days because of a crazy situation (family emergency, remodeling, or perhaps a world-wide pandemic!) It's very easy to just login to your profile and update it with new hours.

Since the release of our last post about Tips to Avoid Email Scams, there have been new ways hackers/scammers are trying to infiltrate your business and personal info. Their email subject and "from" name are familiar to you. So you click because you trust it, only to find out it's not truly from that entity at all and you may have just jeopardized your digital assets. It gets trickier to identify these cases as time goes on. Just remember - WHEN IN DOUBT, DON'T CLICK! If you already did, definitely don't click on anything inside the email, reply, forward...SPAM IT. Read on for ways to protect your information in other ways, not just through email.

No matter the size of your business, it is necessary to protect your digital information from the very start. There are small, but vital steps you can take to protect yourself and your business from others gaining access. The Small Business Administration has put together Ten Cybersecurity Tips for Small Businesses to help you get started or to use as a checkup for your systems.

We would like to add #11 to this list. There are many security features that require passwords, practically all of them. That can be a HUGE issue during employee turnover. It is always necessary to keep a copy of all passwords needed for all employees to operate your business. Too many times, we have had to validate ownership of accounts by a long and tedious process due to no one at the business having access to the previous operator's passwords. "Ain't nobody got time for that!" Right? We recommend keeping such passwords in a locked safe, drawer or cabinet or safe deposit box in which there are safeguards for accessing.

Tips to Avoid Email Scams

Ever wonder if you should open that email? It seems a little fishy, but your curiosity is trying to win you over. Your Spam folder usually catches most scam-my emails, but more and more, scammers are finding ways to make it to the Inbox. There are ways to investigate the legitimacy of the email before even opening it. Check out these tips with examples from my own Inbox and Spam folder.

1. "Please always pray for me"

Asking for prayers is the attention-getter of this scammer. It tugs at your heart strings. Of course I want to pray for those who ask, but I do not know this person, nor did I give them my email address.

Before opening this email, I hover the cursor over the name of the sender. The sender's email address pops up. Your email system may not behave that way, so you can preview the email in a preview pane or open it and look a the details a the top of the email to find the sender's email address. Notice how the outlook has a .fr extension? This means the sender's account is located in Europe, specifically France (domaintyper.com) I definitely don't know an Edith in France.

Evidence = DON'T OPEN IT

2. YOU WON! - Oh, wait...nope. I was just trying to scam you.

Please don't fall for this.

A. I do not know John Houdo.

B. I do not have 1.5 million USD nor did I enter a contest to win $1.5 million. (If you have to tell me it's US dollars, where are you from, or where do you think I am from?)

C. When I hover over John's name it gives me his email address which: does not contain his name, contains letters for a company I do not recognize and has a .ar extension which is from Argentina.

Evidence = DON'T OPEN IT

3. Regarding Business Orders, Inquiries, and False System Emails

The red flag on the PURCHASE ORDER email is that it is not from a company I have purchased from or has purchased from me. Also, when I hover over the sender, it shows another international extention (.au) and the name does not match the sender.

Evidence = DO NOT OPEN IT

The Webmail Admin email is a sneaky one. Yes, my email is called Webmail. Yes, my email address is sfoster@dominatorwebsites.com. Yes, there are times when emails don't go through and an error message is returned to me. But, wait! The returned email errors never look like this. They don't come from Webmail Admin. My email provider is not el-nacional.com.

Evidence = DO NOT OPEN IT!

4. Samantha gets a tip all to herself...

This email looks legit upon first glance. The subject contains a city I do business in, on a topic I may be interested in as a business owner, at the time of year many Chamber of Commerce groups are putting together information packets for the year. Samantha's email address is even from a well known email provider - aol.com. (It is forwarded, so that is the first clue. How did Samantha know to forward this to me and who sent it to her?) This happened to be automatically added to my Spam folder, so the system didn't like it from the beginning. But, let's just say it was in my Inbox and I clicked on it.

Samantha wants me to give her money to advertise in the booklet. Still looks pretty legitimate. She even has an image to show you an example of your ad. (Never open images from unknown email senders! They can carry malicious content.) The add can only be reserved by calling the toll free number below. There is not an email address to find out more information. I haven't heard of CW Promotions before, so I Googled it.

Evidence = DO NOT OPEN IT! (In this case, I already did, so I will just delete it and run my antivirus and malware scan.)

5. Then, there is the FBI.

Really? This was also in my Spam folder, but I was curious, and for the purpose of this blog post, I investigated Mr. "jbcjames FBI Director".

I Googled smgov.net and it led me to the City of Santa Monica's website. I don't think that email address is from the FBI.

Evidence = DO NOT OPEN IT!

6. GoDaddy or Google is the sender.

You may have an email, domain name or website through GoDaddy or Google and get frequent emails from them. If that is the case, you should probably open these emails. However, you may not be the one that manages those aspects of your business or life and do not know which company provides those services for you. That's okay! You can still determine if this is a legit email or not. Preview or open the email (but don't click any links within the email!) and look at the sender's details.

This email is OBVIOUSLY NOT from GoDaddy. You can do the same for the Google emails to check for authenticity.

Evidence = Delete, Take no action. (If you are still not sure, contact your provider and ask them about the email.)

7. Re: Something You Did Not Send Originally

I get a lot of email replies. Not all of them are in response to emails I have sent, however. Those are the ones to beware of. This particular example was from a sender I did not know. I did not send "Phil" an email about Equipment Delivery/Funding Status, so how could he reply to it? He couldn't and he made it look as so to get me to open his bogus email. I didn't even have to dig further to send this one to Spam.

Evidence = DON'T OPEN IT (If you don't remember if it is a reply to your email, open it, but don't click on anything unless you are sure it is legit.)
